My dogs have coughs and skin issues. Is it allergies or kennel cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 10 lbs

12 year old male pit has re-occurring skin infection on belly and ears, then, developed a cough. Sounds like a CHF cough or heartworm....that hacking, almost puking kinda cough. Went to vet n said his heart sounded good but ordered bout of routine geriatric tests. While waiting for income tax check to get tests, my 16 month old male chiweenie developed same cough n is scratching ears also...both r vaccinated. Took both to vet, heartworm neg. He suggested benadryl? Really? Allergies? Agree?

If they have both developed the same cough I would be concerned about viral causes and a potential kennel cough. I would discuss this with your veterinarian. The skin and ears can definitely be allergies. Benadryl is great for allergies and there are other antihistamines if this doesn't work. There are also other great options like cytopoint (an injectable medication for allergies) and apoquel (a daily pill for allergies). Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope they both get better soon.
