My cat's ear infection still goopy. Is it gone or needs cleaning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 10 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs

My cat is 11 years old, he’s a male Maine’s coin, 13 lbs. he hassle a yeast infection in his ear. I have administered the drops our vet gave us for the last ten days. But It still seems to be sensitive to touch and there is still dark goopy stuff located in his ear. How do I know when infection is gone and should I take him to get his ear cleaned out ?

The way we determine if an ear infection has resolved is by examining the ear canal again (looking in it with an otoscope) and taking another swab to look at under the microscope. Sometimes you will still see dark brown discharge on the outside of the ear, but the inside of the ear is clean. So, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Joey's ear and determine if the infection has resolved yet and if the ear needs to be cleaned out. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
