Should I worry if my male cat bites and licks our new kittens?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a male cat (DOT) that is 8 months old. My female cat gave birth to two kittens and they’re almost one month old. Dot keeps licking the kittens and starts biting their neck. They don’t seem to mind and don’t really meow. But I’m scared he might harm them in some way. What do you recommend me to do?

If you are concerned that the male cat may injure the kittens then I would recommend you keep them separated at all times. However, I will say that it is normal for older cats (usually the momma cat) to teach the young kittens discipline and proper behavior by mewing at them, bopping them and nipping at them. This may be all your male cat is trying to accomplish. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
