My dog has fire ant bites. How do I stop paw licking and treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 8 years old

I took my dogs out for a walk today and I’m pretty sure both were bitten by fire ants. They won’t stop licking their paws and refuse to walk because they keep licking at it. My white dog has his leg raised and I’m not really sure where the bites are. How should I treat the bites? They’re both fighting me, so i apologize if the pictures are not very good.

Fire ant bites are miserable! I generally recommend making an Epsom Salt soak for the feet (following the directions on the box) for about 5 minutes in order to decrease the inflammation. That does not need to rinsed off, but if they are still uncomfortable after that, then they may need more treatment, so you may need to see your veterinarian for a prescription for their feet. In the meantime, make sure they are not chewing at their feet because they may damage the skin and create more problems. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
