Why does my dog's penis bleed after thrusting? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

Dog's pennis is bleeding after thrusting on his blanket. He is urinating just normally , isn't in pain, and his pennis isn't left exposed, it will go back in the sheath, he looks fine. Only happens when he thrusts and not every time he does it. What can I do? Is it dangerous and how do I stop it from happening? A vet told me not to let him do it but I can't stop him when I'm at work

It looks like Spanky might have a urethral prolapse in your picture. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian right away since the prolapsed tissue could become damaged and it could affect his ability to urinate normally. A veterinarian might place some suture around the penis if they are able to reduce the prolapse, but other times more in-depth surgery is needed.
