Why is my dog having throat spasms and swallowing a lump after eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 40 lbs

I have a german shephard mix 2 year old dog named Storm. He has been having these throat spasms the last hour, almost two. 2-10 minutes apart. He'll lick and yawn and look like hes swallowing. A lump in his throat moves as he does this. Should I be concerned? This started shortly after he ate his dinner.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I wouldn’t worry very much about this. If could be some mild nausea or a little irritation to the mouth or nothing at all. If there is vomiting, excessive drooling, or reluctance to eat, then it’s time to see your vet. Best of luck to you and Storm.
