Dog ate bird seed and keeps coughing. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 9 years and 7 months old | 25 lbs

My dogs have been eating bird seed in my backyard. I took the food away, because they were both hacking and dry heaving. One dog seems to have stopped, the other continues to cough. She isn't lethargic and is eating normal. Just unsure if it's worth a vet visit or what..?

It is certainly possible that some of the bird seed could be caught in the back of the throat. If the seed has found its way into the laryngeal pouches then your dog will likely need assistance from a veterinarian to get the lodged seed removed. Of course the coughing could be unrelated to the bird seed and could be caused by an infection or even something more serious.

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.
