My puppy's butt protrudes when pooping. Is it a rectal prolapse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 18 days old | 8 lbs

My puppies butt sticks out quite a bit and protrudes badly when she defecates. I got her at 6 weeks and noticed it. She is now 12 weeks old. She was the runt and seems to have wobbly hips and low muscle tone in her rear end. Is this some type of rectal prolapse?

It does not appear to be a traditional case of rectal prolapse. It could be an issue with the internal rectal muscles, or could be normal for her. I would have Daisy Mae checked out by a vet. They can do a thorough physical and neurologic exams, and x-rays to see if there is a congenital disorder. This will help you plan for her future and possibly start special exercises to strengthen her hind end.
