Puppy's 6-month baby canine teeth: will they fall out or need removal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 months and 12 days old | 9.4 lbs

Good morning! My 6 month maltipoo still has his canine teeth, as per the vet yesterday she said they’ll need to be taken out, is this true or is there a possibility they will come out on their own?

At six months of age, there is a chance that the baby canine teeth might still fall out on their own. I usually tell my clients that if they're still there by the time the dog is a year old, they definitely need to be removed.

Normally, the baby canine teeth should fall out as the adult teeth come in, at around 6 months of age. But it's fairly common for them to not fall out normally in many toy breed dogs - leading to "double canine teeth", where the baby tooth is retained just behind the adult tooth. If Teddy is fully grown, it's unlikely that the baby teeth will fall out on their own at this point. They do need to be removed by your vet sometime soon, as otherwise they will trap tartar and bacteria and contribute to problems with the adult teeth - this is usually a fairly quick and easy procedure that can be done at the same time as a neuter or other anesthetic procedure if needed.
