Why is my old dog walking constantly, losing weight, and can't open mouth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 1 month old

My dog has been walking for 16 hrs straight in my back garden. I had to chase him in as he wouldn’t come and then had to hold him down to stop him carrying on. He also seems to be having trouble opening his mouth, he has lost a lot of weight in just under a week. He is a boxer cross mastiff and about 12 yrs old

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Judging from your description of the symptoms you are seeing, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Max so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I worry that something neurological is causing these symptoms, especially with Max's age. I would recommend having his blood tested as well as a physical examination. I hope this helps and Max improves! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any other further questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
