My dog's cheek is swollen. Is it a tooth abscess? Can he wait for vet?

Hi. We came home today to our dog having a moderately swollen cheek (under his eye) ... after online investigation of our own I believe this is a tooth abcscess, can he wait until morning to see his vet?

This is definitely suspicious of an abscess. I've also seen trauma (hit their face on something hard) cause fluid swelling that looks the same, so hopefully this is the case rather than an abscess. Either way, it's not an emergency and he is safe to wait until morning to see the vet. I hope that helps and Ace gets better soon.

    If she has a tooth abscess, there isn't much an emergency vet is going to be able to do (other than the pain medications and antibiotics she's already on), but if she's really uncomfortable or won't eat, then it may be worthwhile. Otherwise, continue with the medications and have her seen tomorrow at her regular clinic. I hope she's feeling much better after Thursday!!

My dogs face has swelled up very large over night, we live very far from a vet. What might it be? and what should I do about it? it isnt bothering him too much he is still eating and drinking.
I am suspicious that he has An abscess (infection). In that location it could be from a tooth, or some sort of trauma or migrating foreign object. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon. This likely needs antibiotics, and possibly surgery as well. In the meantime I would warm compress the area several times a day. This may encourage the abscess to drain which is what we want. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.

Hello. I am sorry for your concerns about Freyja. It does look like she has a tooth root abscess, most likely involving the 4th upper premolar. Antibiotics usually clears the infection very nicely, but often the tooth needs to be removed. As long as Freyja is eating well & is in no significant discomfort, you can wait to have her seen. Placing a warm compress over the area should help with drainage. I would do this for 10 minutes 2-3 times a day. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

In a small dog, my first suspicion would be a tooth-root abscess. Small dogs tend to get rather diseased teeth as they age and are prone to infections like this. The other possibility is that he bumped his face on something. This is over a bony area that can swell with fluid when it hits something hard (i.e. door, chair, etc.). In this case, the swelling will eventually go down within two weeks or so. In order to tell exactly what it is, you'll have to take Teddy to a vet. They can take a sample of the fluid and help to narrow-down the possibilities. I hope that helps and Teddy gets better soon.

Hello My pet dog is having swelling in its lower tooth and its very painful.
A swelling like that typically represents and abscess or a tumor (some of which can be malignant). I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian today. He will need to be sedated and have an x-ray of that area to get a better idea of what is happening. I hope this helps.

Given the location, it could be a tooth root abscess. It isn't an emergency, but is likely uncomfortable. If Dolly is behaving normally, she can probably see her veterinarian in the morning. An oral exam can be done to determine if there is periodontal disease and if so, if it is severe enough to cause an abscess. A complete dental cleaning and possibly extractions may be necessary. If an abscess is ruled out, your veterinarian can perform a fine needle aspirate of the lump to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Treatment options can be discussed once results are returned.

I just noticed that my dog has a lump under her jaw- it seems like it just appeared- planning to take her to the vet in the am- should I be concerned about the evening?
This could be a tooth root abscess or a swelling from an insect bite or a salivary gland problem. Unless you think this is very painful, there is really nothing you can or need to do. If Chelsea appears in a lot of pain you may want to take her to a vet tonight, but if she is comfortable, then there is nothing you need to do.

I agree that I am suspicious of an abscess. This could be an abscess in the skin or it could be a tooth root abscess. A tumor is also possible but they tend to grow slower. I do not think it is well into any type of healing process at this time. I recommend to take Ellie in to see the veterinarian tonight or tomorrow. You need to know if it is related to a tooth root problem or not. The doctor will also start her on antibiotics to help to fight the infection quickly. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. This may not be a salivary gland issue and may be an infection or other cause. If you knew for sure 100% that this was a salivary gland issue, waiting until the morning would be ok. But because the cause is not known, I would recommend getting this looked at sooner. The sooner antibiotics are given for a possible infection , the better. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I would also check blood work to make sure there are no systemic changes that are concerning. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
