My dog's cracked nail makes him limp. Can I treat it at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Redbone Coonhound | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 5 days old | 80 lbs

11 month old redbone cookhouse. Cracked a nail on back food close to the base. No bleeding and not broken looks shattered. Quick doesn’t seem to be affected. Putting weight on it half of the time. Can I treat this from home?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Blue! It’s hard to picture what the nail looks like. If he is that lame on the leg the nail should be evaluated. We do cut the nail back if needed. A cracked or torn nail is a constant source of pain. If you want to post a picture I could try to give you a better idea if Blue should go to the Vet. I hope this helps!
