Is it safe to walk my new puppy outside before all his vaccinations?

Hi I’ve recently got a puppy golden retriever. And I’ve taking him for a few walks on paths and on the oval before his second lot of vaccinations. Is this okay as I’ve been advised it’s a bad idea. I’m worried. I am taking him to the vet today. Also he has been interacting with vacinated dogs

Yes, that is correct is it a bad idea to be taking Lou for walks when he isn't fully vaccinated. Parvovirus is a very contagious disease and can live in the environment, so he could potentially contract that just on these walks. Contact with vaccinated dogs is fine, but you need to be absolutely sure they are fully vaccinated or he risks getting deadly diseases like parvo and distemper. It is never recommended to take a young puppy who isn't fully vaccinated out for walks, and I would stop that practice immediately. He will be fully vaccinated about 10 days after his third lot of vaccines. Wait until then before taking him out on walks. I hope this helps!

Hello, yes you can take your puppy out for walks however, you increase the likelihood that he may become sick. Because he has been vaccinated it makes it less likely, however, you should consider only allowing your puppy around other pets whom you know are fully vaccinated. We are most concerned with diseases such as Parvovirus, distemper, influenza, and kennel cough. Continue to follow the recommended vaccine schedule for your puppy and be cautious about which other dogs come in contact with your puppy. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Can a adult dog go out for walks without his vaccines?
I would not recommend it. Without vaccines your dog is not protected against a disease like Parvovirus which can be fatal. The virus lives in the soil and can survive up to one year after it is excreted from the body. The vaccine is highly effective but it must be administered in a proper timeline. I recommend to keep your new pup inside and to get him vaccinated ASAP. Best of luck.

Can I get a walk from my dog in public when he completed his vaccine?
A dog is considered fully vaccinated after receiving a distemper/parvovirus vaccine every 3-4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age and a rabies vaccine (dependent upon location). About 2 weeks after the last vaccine, your dog should have developed an appropriate immune response and protective effect from the vaccines, so at that time he would be able to walk in public.

As long as your puppy stays current on his [vaccination series](https://www.petcoach.co/article/vaccination-recommendations-for-puppies-puppy-shots) (boosters every 3-4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age), he can certainly go on walks in your neighborhood. In fact, it's very important to get him out and about at this age since the critical [socialization](https://www.petcoach.co/article/socialization-of-your-puppy) period for dogs last from 6 to 16 weeks of age - so he needs to be out seeing the world, the sooner the better. I would recommend avoiding [dog parks](https://www.petcoach.co/article/dog-parks-fun-and-games) and other busy areas where large numbers of unknown dogs have been, but it should be fine to walk him in quieter areas.

It's not safe, mainly because the outside grass area is exposed to other dogs. parvo virus, which is the main danger at this age, can stay in the grass/soil for many months which puts Teddy in danger as long as he is not fully vaccinated.

I recommend to wait until after the second set of vaccines (although he still will not be fully protected). If you back yard is fenced in, inaccessible to stray dogs/wild canids, and no dog who survived parvo has been in your back yard for the past 2 years, it should be fine to take him there to play. Thank you for using Boop by Petco and congratulations on your new puppy! Unfortunately, Maximus is not fully vaccinated at this point, so he should not be going outside. Depending on your state, he can be fully vaccinated by 12 or 16 weeks. If this was his first round of shots, he will need a booster in 2-4 weeks and then his Rabies vaccine at 12-16 weeks as well as his last booster. Maximus should have minimal contact with other dogs (even where other dogs have gone to the bathroom) as you can’t be sure they are not carrying any of the viruses that Maximus is not vaccinated for that can make him very sick. I know it is difficult to keep a large active puppy inside, but your vet can work with you to have Maximus fully vaccinated in a reasonable amount of time.

I just want to know when my puppy is cleared to go on walks outside. He is 15 weeks old and he has had 3 sets of the : Distemper/Adenovirus/Parvo/Parainfluenza and one set of Lepto and Bordatella. We live in Brooklyn NY
Hank is not yet fully vaccinated so you still need to use caution. Each vaccine does provide protection but this will not be complete until all the vaccines are given. Additionally, it take 10-14 days before the vaccines actually take effect. I recommend to continue restricting the areas he is allowed until the vaccines have all been completed and taken effect. Avoid areas where many dogs use the bathroom since these areas will be more at risk for parvovirus. He is allowed to meet other dogs who are healthy and up to date on vaccines. I hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I think there is a fine line between socialization and trying to protect them from infectious diseases. I think it is fine to walk not fully vaccinated puppies on sidewalks, roads and parks that don't have a lot of dog traffic. No dog parks or doggie day care. Only allow play with dogs that are fully vaccinated and not sick. I just tell owners to be smart about it! I hope this helps!

Hello. Just to be sure, please try to wait until Vino gets that last booster at 16 weeks of age. I agree 100% with your vet that the 6 week shot was very likely ineffective, so he does need the last vaccine to make sure he can fight off any disease he might come across. Better safe than sorry.
