Why are pet birds so sensitive to smoke, sprays, and perfumes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered

Canaries are harmed and killed by smoke, sprays, perfumes, etc. Why are they so sensitive? Also, does the same happen to Budgies and Finches?

Hello. Yes, it is true that small birds are very susceptible to many noxious odors, mainly because of their diminished respiratory capacities, & how their respiratory tracts function. Care must be taken around all birds when it comes to anything used as a fragrance in a home. With good ventilation, small amounts of smoke & fragrances ( like perfumes ) are safe.
