My cat falls, circles frantically, and bites his back. What's up?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 7 lbs

My cat will suddenly fall off something & start frantically going in a circle & trying to reach his back end. I thought it was fleas biting but I can’t find anything even similar online to what my cat does

Hello, The behavior you have described is concerning for a primary neurologic disease which may be infectious especially in a young cat. In order to get a diagnosis, you will need to have Skunk examined by a veterinarian. The veterinarian will need to perform diagnostics such as bloodwork and x-rays. If the veterinarian suspects primary neurologic disease, they may recommend evaluation by a veterinarian that specializes in neurology. Prior to the veterinary appointment, try to video a few episodes to share with your veterinarian.
