Should I switch dog food after puppy had soft stools on Blue Buffalo?

My dog was having extremely soft stools and going often throughout the day and night. I have put him on a bland diet as I believe it has to do with his food. He was eating Blue buffalo wilderness large breed puppy dry food. I feel like it was too much protein. He has now had solid stools for about 2 days. I will have to start feeding him dog food again so should I start with the blue buffalo again or find another food to give him? If I switch foods what brand do you recommend?

I'm sorry Hulk has been having problems with soft stool! It could be that his diet was causing the diarrhea, but it could also be that he had a GI illness or ate something rotten. It's good that the bland diet has helped clear it up, and I would find another food to feed him besides Blue Buffalo. I am not a fan at all of it, there are many cases of dogs having GI issues on it. It also have very poor quality control over how it is made, and they have had a number of recalls. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. You can get his used to one of these new brands by slowly adding it to the bland diet, and over time, increasing the amount of the new food and decreasing the bland diet until he is eating the bland diet only. Blue Buffalo is not a good food despite what all their marketing ads tell you. You will find very few vets that think it's a good choice. She would be better off back on Purina and I'd suggest the Pro Plan Puppy for large breed dogs. I think you should switch her back slowly to the Purina. It is typical for dogs to poop a lot of Blue Buffalo as they don't really seem to absorb/digest much of it. Poor Addison! This could be caused by several things from large water intake, parasites, or even her dog food. Blue buffalo can actually be too rich for some dogs. I have also seen other complications from eating blue buffalo like bladder crystals and bladder stones. You some consider switching her to something With less protein like science diet, Royal canin, or Iams. If you want a food with a more “natural” approach, natural balance is also a good choice. When you switch her, I would slowly mix in the new food and gradually transition her over a 10 to 14 day period. Also, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to do a fecal to check for worms. I would make sure they also check for giardia and campylobacter as these are parasites/bacteria that commonly can cause similar issues but are difficult to diagnose. Lastly, i would get her started on some probiotics. I like ones made by vetriscience and Thorne. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Blue. If you don't have enough to make a slow transition, you will have to make do with what you have and hope the new food doesn't upset his stomach. Mix the foods together tonight, and then give him the new food in the morning. As an aside, I do not recommend feeding Blue Wilderness. It is a terrible food, and it's one of the foods linked to causing dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. The FDA is investigating that link. You would be hard pressed to find any vet who recommends Blue Buffalo, as it causes many other issues such as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. I would feed him a much better brand such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, or Iams. I hope this helps!

I have had a lot of problems with my patients eating blue buffalo. I would off Howie plain boneless skin chicken breast white and rice for about 3 days then slow transition him from the chicken and rice to a new diet. I would look into natural balance, science diet, royal canin or iams. These are all great foods that are less likely to upset him stomach. If they have a sensitive stomach formula, try that. I would also keep him on his probiotic non-stop. Finally, before finished the giardia meds, I would have your vet recheck his poop sample to ensure it is completely gone. If he continues to vomit or if he starts having diarrhea again, I would have your vet take another look him. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry that Prince has been having problems with diarrhea! I personally am not a fan at all of Blue Buffalo for a number of reasons, and many of my colleagues have seen dogs with GI problems from being fed Blue Buffalo. There are a couple of brands of dog food that I typically recommend which have canned food options such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I hope this helps :-)

Poor Theo! Given that he was throwing up the Blue Buffalo (BB) food, but now isn't vomiting on the Simply Nurish, I would suspect that the BB isn't agreeing with his stomach. As for his poop, changes in diet can lead to looser stools. Even though you did half and half to help him switch, typically it's better to do 1/4 new food and 3/4 old food to start. To help Theo with his diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to try. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. I would also recommend getting Theo's vaccines done ASAP if he's seven months of age. I see that you are in Utah, and a rabies vaccines for all dogs is required by law, so it is important that he get that vaccines plus the DHPPi combination shot (distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, parainfluenza) once he is feeling better. I'm glad to hear that Roo is healthy aside from this soft stool. Yes, it's absolutely fine to switch her to a standard grain-containing diet. The FDA has issued warnings about grain-free diets and a concerning link to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), so switching is a great idea. I prefer brands like Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, Royal Canin, Iams, or Eukanuba, as these companies employ veterinary nutritionists and conduct proper testing on their diets. Since Roo is only 6 months old, be sure to look for a puppy food, as these are formulated for growth. When she's about one year old, you can switch her to an adult food. One of the most important things to remember is that anytime you switch her diet - even just opening a new bag of food - it's best to mix the old and new foods together gradually over 5-7 days. Sudden diet changes can trigger some vomiting and/or diarrhea, which is the last thing anyone needs! I hope that everything goes well!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lila. There is a lot of confusion regarding pet food and it can seem difficult to make a good choice. You need to keep in mind that every pet is different and what works for your dog may not work for someone else's. I recommend a food that is certified by AAFCO to start as this means that is meets minimum standards. Next, the puppy need to like it and eat it willingly. There needs to be no vomiting and diarrhea on the diet nor an excessive amount of bowel movements. A dog should defecate 2-3 times per day. More than this is abnormal. Finally, her haircut should be glossy and healthy. If she is meeting all of these requirements on her diet, then there is no reason to change. My only warning is to avoid grain free diets as there is recent research linking them to heart disease. I hope this information helps!

I do not recommend Blue Buffalo diets at all. I think they are too rich, especially for a young puppy. Also Blue Buffalo does not follow AAFCO standards (nutritional guidelines). So, I don't think their food is properly balanced. All they do well is marketing. Just because it is expensive doesn't make it better. If I were you I would find another food that uses AAFCO guidelines. It will tell you on the bag where the nutritional information is. If you could call the shelter where you got her and ask what they were feeding that would be helpful. The other thing I would do is feed a probiotic as that will help repopulate the GI tract with good bacteria. Hope this helps! Best wishes!

I would switch him to plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice for a little while to see if this settles his tummy. If it improves, I would SLOWLY start to transition him to a new puppy food. I like science diet and royal canin. These are diets that have been around for a long time with the proper studies to back them up. I would also put him on a probiotic like purina fortiflora or proviable to see if this helps. If he is continuing to have loose stools, I would have your vet take a look at him to rule out parasites including giardia. Your vet will be able to do additional diagnostics if needed as well. They will be able to get him on the proper treatment to help him feel better as soon as possible. I hope this helps!
