Why is my kitten's eye irritated and pink? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 10 months and 7 days old | 9 lbs

My kitten, the last couple of weeks has had an irritated eye. She had discharge(whiteish), but it has mostly stopped. Her eye was very red but now is more pink. At one point I saw something that looked like a hair laying horizontally on her eye, but I didn’t know how to touch it without hurting her more. She squints less and seems to not be in pain. What could be wrong? What other symptoms should I look out for and what advice can you give me? What can I do for her at the moment?

It sounds like Bunny had a corneal scratch/ulcer that is healing now. Typically we treat these with a topical antibiotic ointment placed directly on the cornea. I would still recommend taking her in to have the eye evaluated, because if she is still squinting it hasn’t completely healed yet. In the meantime you can gently wipe any discharge around the eye with a clean wet warm cloth to prevent further irritation around the eye. Is she isn’t squinting, she likely will be ok and has healed completely on her own, which you should feel grateful for, since this rarely happens. Corneal scratches are caused by some kind of trauma to the eye itself, which isn’t a common occurrence. Best wishes with your pet Bunny moving forward. Best wishes and take care.
