Why is my mouse's eye red, swollen, and shut after waking up?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | 11 months and 16 days old

The skin around my mouses left eye is a bit red and swollen, she can almost open it fully when she gets exited or runs around, but when she first wakes up it’s almost completely shut ! I just noticed this yesterday but I thought maybe it just got irritated or she slept on it wrong? She is very active and doesn’t seem to be irritated by her eye. I also have another mouse but she seems perfectly fine.

I would be suspicious that Ginger may have scraped or otherwise injured her cornea. This causes squinting, pain, and swelling and irritation around the eye. A warm compress to the area may help with comfort, but she may need to see a veterinarian for definitive diagnosis and possibly antibiotics. An abscessed tooth could also Cause similar symptoms. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
