My dog's tail looks crooked. Could it be fractured? Is it serious?

Any fracture is very concerning because it's not only painful to the dog, but it can also have a negative effect on the nerves in that area (i.e. compression on the nerves). If you are thinking Aurora has fractured her tail, I would take her into a vet right away. X-rays need to be done to confirm if her tail is fractured or not, and the vet can discuss treatment options for it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It really depends on the break. She should be examined by a vet to determine the best way to treat. Your vet can take an x-ray to evaluate the break and then decide if it should be treated surgically. If the break is mild, than rest and pain medications may be enough.

If he is painful, then he should be seen sooner rather than later so the doctor can prescribe pain medication. Do not medicate Austin without the advice of your veterinarian. An x-ray may be indicated to confirm fracture. He may have suffered a muscle or soft tissue injury which can be just as painful.

Many dogs will naturally have a hemivertebrae, or partial vertebral bone in their tail. This can give the tail a kinked or broken appearance. If she let you touch it, wags it normally and does not appear painful than this may just be a natural variation. If there is swelling, or she seems painful, is holding the tail tucked or not moving it then she should be seen by a veterinarian to evaluate if there is a fracture or other injury. My dog has a pain in the tail.she is not able to move it and finds it difficult to sit.she is not able to raise her tail.what could have happened to her.will an accidental stamping of tail by me could have caused it.pls suggest
It is possible that she has a fracture, which is causing pain and difficulty moving her tail and sitting. An x-ray at the vet can confirm or rule out this injury. A tail and a shoe in the wrong places at the wrong times could certainly have caused it.

How do you know if your dog’s tail is broken or just bruised & can you do anything
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your about Lily. The only way to tell if her tail is broken is to have her seen by a vet for x-rays. If it is broken, yes the vet can treat it. It will also be painful to her, and the vet can prescribe pain medication. Please do not give her any human pain medications as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take her into a vet now. I hope this helps!

Think my dog broke his tail. He is happy and playing and acts as if it doesn't bother him. What should I do for it.
The tail does appear broken from the photo. If there is an open wound then he should see a vet as antibiotics (oral) will be needed to prevent infection. If there is no wound, your vet is not likely to do anything except dispense anti-inflammatories and/or pain medication. These type of fractures are not splinted as the tail is extremely difficult to bandage. Surgery is not done on these except in the case of severe injury and in those cases, the tail is amputated. Most often these injuries are left to heal on their own. There will always been a kink in the tail where the break is.

Hi my dog wont move her tail. Its stuck in a downward position. It's just hanging and she seems in pain. I tried touching it and she bites and becomes aggresive. not sure whats the cause but she can't move it.
This could indicate a fracture of her tail or dislocation as the tail has joints just like the rest of the body. It could also indicate an anal gland issue or even a problem with the lumbosacral joint. Do not give your dog in a human medication as it could be toxic to dogs. I recommend having your dog seen by her veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian as she may need x-rays to diagnose the problem as well as dog safe medication for pain. keep her quiet and restrict her activity until she can be seen by veterinarian and do not try to manipulate the site at all.

A tail can be broken, indeed and it is very painful. Sometimes a car can drive on a cat's tail, the cat shoots off and pulls the tail so hard it cat get damaged. He could also have had a fight and gotten injured. I suggest you take him to your vet for an exam. The vet may want to do radiographs to see whether there is a fracture, and will also prescribe pain medicine/NSAIDs to relieve inflammation and pain. A broken tail will usually heal by itself over time, but it is a painful injury.

I almost slammed my puppy’s tail shut in the door, she was crying for a whole minute then layed down. She is not bleeding but her tail won’t go up like it usually is what should I do ?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This would warrant a veterinary evaluation for further assessment and treatment. These types of traumatic lesions can result in a fracture of the tail which can be quite painful. Even when a fracture is not present, this tends to result in a lot of pain. They would be able to evaluate her and at the very least start medications for pain. Good luck and have a good night!

Something is wrong with my dogs tail. Initially I thought it was broken but when I tried touching it moving up and down the tail gently squeezing to asses a break or nothing dog did not respond. I tried lifting the tail and the dog responded in pain
It sounds like Misty's anal sacs may be impacted if they are swollen, and they will need to be expressed to prevent them from rupturing. If you've never expressed her anal sacs before, I would have her seen by the vet to have it done. When a dog's anal sacs are impacted, that is painful for the dog, and it could cause Misty to hold her tail differently. I don't think her tail is broken, but I can't say that for certain without seeing her in person. I would have Misty seen by a vet tomorrow, who can diagnose if her tail is broken, and can express her anal sacs if needed.
