Why is my dog's wound resistant to one antibiotic, but another works?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 35 lbs

Hi,my dog had a culture for her wound showing its Susceptible to cefpodoxime but Resistant to cephalexin each time. Arent the two antibiotics members of the same family, if so how is one able to treat the organism but the other is resistant. Will the susceptible antibiotic work knowing this? Thanks, CH

Although cephalexin and cefpodoxime are both cephalosporin antibiotics, they are different drugs - so it's certainly possible for an organism to be susceptible to one and not the other. Culture results generally give us a very good idea of what antibiotics are likely to be useful in treating the infection, so I don't see any problem with using cefpodoxime if this is what your veterinarian has recommended.
