My dog eats horse poop. How can I stop it and is it dangerous?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 14 lbs

My Shih Tzu, aged 6 years, does not eat his own poop. We have horses next door and he has started eating THEIR poop! We have cleaned it out of our yard, but some of their poop gets into our yard and still does it when we are not looking. How do we get him to stop and how dangerous can it be?

There is not way to get him to stop except to restrict his access to those areas. This does have potential to spread bacterial and intestinal parasite infections so I would make sure he is on a regular dewormer (most heartworm preventions already include this) and monitor for any vomiting or diarrhea.
