Is it safe to feed my 3-month-old puppy only fresh home-cooked food?

my puppy is currently 3 months old and i wanted to know when can i start cooking him fresh food only in water

You can give Lukas some fresh food as an occasional treat, but not as a daily diet. Puppies need higher amounts of protein, calories, and calcium than adult dogs, and he should only be fed a puppy formulated food to meet his nutritional requirements. It's very hard to do that with a home diet. I will put a list below of fruits and veggies that are safe to feed him as a treat. He can also have boiled white meat chicken (no bones), boiled lean meat, and boiled eggs as an occasional treat. I would not recommend trying to feed a home-cooked diet to a growing large breed puppy like Buddy - this is because nutritional balance is extremely important at this age for proper growth and development. It's extremely difficult to properly balance a home-cooked diet for a growing puppy like this - not as simple as just following a recipe and adding some supplements, I'm afraid. Nutritional imbalances in young puppies can cause severe orthopedic issues later in life such as hip dysplasia, growth plate abnormalities, and other types of joint problems. For this reason, I would strongly recommend feeding a good quality puppy food for large breed puppies - my favorites are Purina Pro Plan and Royal Canin, but there are many options available. Once your dog is fully grown, you can revisit the idea of a home-cooked diet if you wish, since it's much easier to balance this type of diet for an adult dog :)

People food and veggies are fine as a treat in moderation, however Nala Jai should be on a balanced puppy diet at this point in time to help her grow and stay healthy. Several brands are available that are great such as Science Diet, Purina, Eukanuba, etc, and many offer puppy formulations specific to your dog's breed, age, and size. Fresh veggies such as a piece of carrot, broccoli or some lean chicken are all great as treats, but should be used in moderation and not as the primary diet.

What are some home foods I should feed my puppy?
It is difficult to make and feed a balanced home made diet. More often that not, the dog will develop a nutritional deficiency. This is especially true for puppies. Ideally, Murphy should be fed a good quality commercial puppy diet. Brands include ProPlan, Orijen, Canidae and Acana.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dolly. I do not recommend home cooking unless you have the diet formulated by a veterinary nutritionist. I recommend www.balanceit.com if you are interested. Otherwise, I would continue with Royal Canin as it is a high quality and well balanced puppy food. Puppies grow at a rapid rate. Nutritional deficiencies can be very problematic at this age. I hope this information helps!

What are the best homemade dog foods? that I can feed to my puppy as I can't feed commercial dog food as it is not available near me.
Homemade foods are tough because they are almost always deficient in vitamins and minerals without a supplement. It is not impossible, however. I like the website balance it.com. You can set up an account, look for recipes, and they can even analyze the nutrients in your current recipe. The key is a meat+ grain+ fruits and veggies for nutrients. Good luck!

Yes, homemade treats are fine. There are plenty of recipes you can find online on how to make homemade treats. All the ingredients you list are OK and there are MANY more. Just google some homemade treat recipes for dogs and go from there. Just be sure you are not feeding too many calories. A lot of treats are not good especially for small breed dogs. You could add some meat or chicken to your puppies dog food but your puppy needs to have some dog food because it is nutritionally balanced for a puppy. Feeding just meat/ chicken and rice is not recommended because your puppy would not be getting the proper nutrition. Raw diets are really not recommended. There is an extremely high chance he could get salmonella or E. coli poisoning just like if we ate raw meat. Despite what TV commercials would lead you to believe, your dog is not a wolf. Dogs have been domesticated a very long time now and their GI tracts have evolved to reflect that. If you want to feed a homemade diet you can do that but the food must be cooked an you need to have a veterinary nutritionist formulate the diet so that is properly balanced with all the vitamins and minerals a dog needs - especially a large breed puppy. I just recommend you feed him a large breed puppy food that is already formulated with everything he needs. A premium brand (not boutique) that is within your budget.
