Should I wean my senior dog off phenobarbital after no seizures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | 1 year and 4 months old | 8 lbs

Mya is eleven years old. You have her as one. I want to ask does it make sense to wean her of the phenobarbital. she has not had any seizures since first getting them. Its been 6 plus weeks. she takes half tablet 2 times a day. The prognosis was a brain tumor but no mri was done . Blood tests all good. what is the best way to go about it and if its worth a try.

In my opinion it doesn't make sense to try and wean her from the phenobarbital, if the main suspicion is a brain tumor, very high chances that the seizures will come back at some point soon, weaning her from this medication is not recommended if this is the case as weaning takes a long time and if the seizures come back it may be more difficult to control the seizures.
