Why is my old, overweight dog suddenly scared and shaking at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed

My dog is getting really scared over nothing and I'm not sure what's bugging her but she keeps shaking D: I could literally just move my legs and she'll scream and run away, but this only really happens at night AFAIK. She's old (and idk her exact weight but she's overweight), but I don't think she's just losing her eyesight or hearing. She was born with brain damage but had never been abused. Any suggestions?

I’m so sorry to hear about Precious. I actually hear stories similar to this quite often. Many times it turns out to be a painful back or neck - especially in the low-to-the-ground, long-bodied pets like Precious. Being overweight makes them even more prone to back injury. You may also see signs like refusing to go out the dog door or refusing to jump on couch/bed as normal. Of course there are other things that could be going on but I’d definitely take Precious in to the vet for a good exam. Hopefully all she needs are some pain medications and rest. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Precious!
