My pregnant dog is sick and not eating. Can I give her dextrose?

Poor Zia! I suspect that she is dehydrated and weak, then when you have her the dextrose yesterday it gave her a lift. Unfortunately the effects seen to have been temporary. I imagine that the benefit has worn off and she is too sick to get better by herself. She may have a bug in her stomach that is making her vomit, or something else such as a foreign body. I think after this period of time you will need to take her to a vet as she will likely need IV fluids and will need some medication to help her get better. If you can't take her to the vet all you can do at home is keep her warm and get her to take as much fluids as you can.

Since she is pregnant, offer her a puppy formula through her pregnancy and until she weans the litter. You can add in a teaspoon of plain baby food or mix in some warm water to encourage her to eat. Choose one diet and stick with it. Switching diets frequently can lead to stomach upset and may reinforce her finicky habit. If she doesn't start eating again in the next 24 hours, have her physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any underlying cause. Your vet won't be able to confirm a pregnancy until about 4 weeks after the last mating.

I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian to have her examined. It's possible that she has gastroenteritis, an infection, or any number of other diseases. Your veterinarian can take her temperature and may recommend an ultrasound to check the puppies' heart rates and make sure they are not in distress. I typically recommend feeding a high quality puppy food to pregnant dogs, but your veterinarian might recommend trying a higher calorie therapeutic diet. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor May! Yes, I would bring her to the Vet. I would want to be sure she doesn't have an infection in her uterus (pyometra) which requires an emergency spay. A pyometra is an emergency. Dogs with an infected uterus drink a lot, don't eat, vomit and are very sick. She should have X-rays of her belly (won't hurt any puppies), blood work and potentially an ultrasound. I wish May the very best!

Poor Princess! She could be pregnant but she could also have something else going on like parasites, eating something she shouldn’t, a bacterial infection or even a viral infection. You can try to offer her some plain chicken (no bones) and white rice to see if you can entice her to eat. If she doesn’t perk up soon, I would have your vet take a look at her. I worry she is going to get dehydrated. Your vet will be able do a fecal, blood work and even X-rays if needed. Your vet will be able to assess her hydration and give her fluids if needed. Poor Gypsy. This could be due several things like a respiratory problem, eating something she shouldn't, all the hormones, a bacterial/viral infection, parasites and much more. Since she is pregnant, we have to be careful what medicines she gets put on. I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure all of the puppies are still okay. You are definitely stuck in a pretty difficult situation here. Obviously as a pregnant bitch, Jenny really needs to continue to eat in order to be healthy enough to carry her pregnancy. If she is ill, she might require medications to make her feel better. The main problem with this is that there are very, very few medications that are considered safe and effective for pregnant and nursing animals. There is only one oral antibiotic in America that is readily administered to pregnant dogs, and it is called Clavamox. It is a penicillin based antibiotic. My assumption is that your vet likely gave a penicillin based injection. If this has not helped at all, she should probably be reassessed, placed on some fluids, and have her fetuses' viability checked with ultrasound. An ultrasound should be able to detect fetal heart beat, so if they appear weak or not present at all than this could be an indicator of an infectious process causing abortion. Just keep offering a variety of things to see what she likes best. It may be a good idea to have her examined by a vet to see if she is sick, anemic, low blood pressure, or having any other medical issues with her pregnancy.

Poor girl! I would offer her a home cooked meal of plain boiled chicken and rice to see if this helps to entice her to eat. If she after a few days of being on vitamins and she still isn't acting right then I would contact your ve to do additional diagnostics. If your vet hasn't already I would ask them to do a fecal to check for intestinal parasites and blood work to make sure everything else looks ok. If she is close to the end of her pregnancy this could all be normal in preparation for labor. A lot of dogs will have a decrease in activity and appetite in the last 3-5 days of pregnancy. I'm sorry that Ginger is not feeling well. It is concerning that she is not eating well for the past two days. You could try to feed her a mixture of plain boiled chicken and plain white rice to see if this will stimulate her appetite. If she does start eating it and there are no other signs of illness, then I would start to transition her to a puppy food. She should eat puppy food throughout her pregnancy and while she's nursing the puppies. If she still refuses to eat, i do think you need to take her to the veterinarian. They will most likely recommend doing some blood testing and possibly x-rays of her abdomen as there are many things that can cause a decreased appetite.
