Is Selegiline right for my senior dog with CCD and liver disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 15 lbs

Chihuahua diagnosed with CCD, slightly enlarged liver, hypoglycemia and possible cancer (insulinoma). Would Selegiline be recommended for the CCD or not due to the other issues? I fear it may be time to euthanize due to quality of life, but I’mnot sure. He still eats and drinks, but soils himself everyday, is blind, cant bark anymore and mostly just sleeps. He’s confused most of the time and walks into furniture that hasnt been moved in years. Already tried senior vitamins and Denosyl. Thx.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I am sorry to hear that Dexter is aging so much. My late dog was 20 years old and had a heart murmur, liver disease, kidney disease and CCD. I placed him on selegiline at the end because I felt it would make him sleep better and not be as confused. I felt that it helped a little, but wasn't great. It should be used with caution in liver or renal disease. If you think it will make him more comfortable for the time he has left, then I would put him on a trial of the medication along with a liver supplement such as Denamarin. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
