Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 70 lbs
I don't know what to do with my Golden Retreiver. My husband and I have spent $2,000+ over the past 6mos for his allergy shots. He still can't be alone without a cone, or else he will chew a hot spot. Our vet has only suggested Apoquil and steroids to supplement and we just don't have the money. Should we wait out the shots for a few more months? We are so lost.

I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this with Sarge. Allergies can be just miserable for everyone involved. Allergy hyposensitization injection can take up to 12 months to work, but it is less likely that you will see a significant improvement if you haven't seen anything after 6 months. I am including more information on allergy injections below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2430 Apoquel is certainly expensive, but steroids are not, so you may consider steroids temporarily. You may also ask your veterinarian about a Cytopoint injection which will be more expensive than steroids, but might be a better option. https://www.zoetisus.com/products/dogs/cytopoint/ Unfortunately, allergies are going to be a lifelong problem for Sarge if you are dealng with environmental allergies, so it might be worth the time and money to consult with a veterinary dermatologist to find the best long term solution for Sarge. Hopefully you can find a dermatologist near you here. https://www.acvd.org/tools/locator/locator.asp?ids=16_Find_Dermatologist Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
