My dog has a cracked nail. What's the healing process and how long?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 5 years and 8 months old | 60 lbs

My dog cracked one of his nails about two weeks ago. Been keeping en eye on it, preventing him from licking it. Is this healing well? In time will it get better? Am I just being impatient? It does not bleed much at all and he is still able to play and walk as normally. I just have no idea what the cracked nail healing process looks like.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I don't currently see or hear anything that concerns me about Graham's nail. The nail healing process can take quite some time. I usually clip the affected nail and tell people that it will probably be back to normal in a month or so. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Graham!
