My nursing dog is skinny. When should I wean 5-week-old puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 27 lbs

Puppies are now 5 weeks old. Mama is sitting all day with puppies and providing them milk. I'm also giving the puppies solid food 4 times a day but hen also mom is sitting all day and providing them milk. Mother dog have become very skinny even though she is eating food. Should I separate mother dog from puppies. Also how much time in a day puppies should drink mama milk at this age and til weaning (Like three time in a day at 5 weeks and 2 time in a day at 6 week)

It is normal for the mom to lose some weight during lactation, but if you are seeing ribs, then she is not eating enough calories. The best way to ensure she is getting all the necessary nutrients is to feed a formulated dog food; one that is made for lactating dogs is best. You can start weaning the pups from their mom now. Below are links to great articles that explains how to wean the pups and the nutritional needs of the mom and pups. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/breeding-for-dog-owners-caring-from-birth-to-weaning https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/feeding-the-nursing-dog https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/feeding-growing-puppies I hope that helps and all is well with Tofy and her pups.
