My dog died bleeding from his ear. Was it a brain bleed or CHF?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

Our little Mat had CHF and became weak before passing a couple of days ago. We were not surprised to lose him, but very surprised to find that he had significantly bled from his ear around the time he died. Would this suggest an brain bleed as cause of death instead of CHF?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I am sorry to hear of your loss of Mat. The cause could have been an aneurysm or a head injury. There is unfortunately no way to tell 100% for sure without examining the body and performing additional diagnostics. A bleeding disorder could have also lead to abnormal bleeding. Again, I am sorry for the loss of Mat. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. If you contact your veterinarian, you may be able to have him examine Mat's body to see if anything can be done to help figure the cause out.
