My pug's head has a bloody, wet, pink spot. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | unneutered | 3 years old | 18 lbs

I found a dried blood on my pug's head which has made the fur thick in that area. After washing it I can see that skin at that region has become light pink. Looking under light, it also appears to be a little wet. He do scratch this area aggressively often, but not too much. What's it and how serious this looks? I have my vet's appointment on Monday. Is this emergency, or can it wait till Monday?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. It is not an emergency but it may possibly get worse during the next 24-48hours, especially if he keeps scratching.
