How long can my dog take low-dose steroids for allergies safely?

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 7 years and 4 months old | 14.5 lbs

Hi I have just taken lily off apoque one daily for her allergies as she's been on it 6 months and this last month we hv had to support it with prednisolone and piriton as it's never seemed to work for her I won't use cytopoint The vet has put her on 2mg daily prednisolone I'm so worried about steroids so I suppose I'm just after reassurance how many years could it be possibly before we see any side effects at that low dose She's 7 now

That is a low dose, however, there is no set time frame for you to see side effects. Some dogs are more sensitive and develop side effects quickly, and some dogs are on it longer before this happens. Side effects include excessive thirst and hunger, panting, developing a pot-bellied appearance, and losing overall muscle tone. It is not a medication that is ideal for long-term use. Allergies can be very frustrating to manage. If you have a veterinary dermatologist in your area, you may consider allergy testing and even allergy shots to try and make Lily more comfortable. This isn't available everywhere, but if other medications haven't helped, it might be worth looking into. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
