What should I do if my 3-week-old puppy has brownish yellow diarrhea?

My 3 week old puppy is having brownish yellow diarrhea. Is this normal?

Diarrhea is never normal in any dog regardless of age, and it can be very serious in a three week old puppy. Newborn puppies can become easily dehydrated from diarrhea, and can quickly go downhill. She could be suffering from intestinal worms or could have a GI illness. She needs veterinary care now for this diarrhea, I would take her, her mother, and her littermates into a vet right away. In a puppy this young I would be concerned about intestinal parasites. This is fairly easy to diagnose and treat with a fecal examination. I would recommend taking your puppy to the vet as soon as possible to begin treatment because severe diarrhea in such a small, young pup could cause severe problems like anorexia and dehydration. I'm sorry to hear that! The most common cause of diarrhea in puppies this age would be intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, or coccidia. Young pups like this can get very sick, very quickly so I would recommend taking them to the vet today for an exam if possible. He/she can do a fecal exam to check for parasites or other abnormalities and get them started on appropriate medication to treat the problem.

Poor pup! No, it's not normal for her to have diarrhea, especially if it's been going on for a week now. I would be concerned that she may have an intestinal parasite of some kind, or possibly an infection causing the diarrhea. I would recommend taking her to the vet today if you can for an exam - he/she can do a fecal exam to check for parasites or other problems, and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat the diarrhea depending on what is found.

If the diarrhea is very watery then yes, you should be a bit concerned as they can get dehydrated quickly. If it is just soft, then I would give it about 24-36 hours to see if it firms up on it's own. If not, they should see a vet for sure.

Poor pups! The most common cause of diarrhea in puppies this age is intestinal parasites, so I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet to be checked tomorrow morning, if you can. He/she can prescribe an appropriate dewormer or other medication if needed, depending on what is found. If the fecal exam is normal, then it would be best to bring the puppies in for an exam sooner than next Monday if possible since they may need an antibiotic or other medication to treat the diarrhea - it's best not to let this go too long, since young puppies like this can get very sick, very quickly.

Puppies commonly have intestinal parasites that can cause diarrhea. Many of these are microscopic and not visible in the poop. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Please take a fresh poop sample with you to your appointment. You are doing the right thing by giving her chicken and rice, as that's recommended to try if it's thought the diarrhea is caused by GI upset. It could be, however, that Maggie has intestinal worms, which would also cause diarrhea and is coming in young puppies. I would take her into the vet today for an exam with a sample of her feces. The vet can examine her feces under the microscope for signs of worms, and give her a deworming treatment for it.

This is a very concerning presentation and a gastrointestinal infection is likely. 3 weeks old puppies usually have a liquid diet based on milk (from the mother or appropriate milk's replacement products for dogs). In this case, if possible at all, I would strongly recommend a veterinary check up as antibiotics and worming treatment may be required.

If he hasn't been dewormed before, then it would be good to give a dewormer as prescribed by a vet, or as instructed by the manufacturer. It is definitely a good sign if he is eating and drinking well. Diarrhea is a common problem with puppies and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Bullu has any of the following, then he should see a vet doctor: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help him get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and cooked rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available

This can be an indication of irritation or infection of the GI tract. I'd have him checked out by a vet. Be sure to bring his mother and siblings with him to the appointment since he cannot be separated from his mother.
