Is my dog okay after licking bleach residue or inhaling fumes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | 20 lbs

I cleaned with bleach today because something major happened in my house. I had gloves on but at the end wiped a few things without gloves. I washed my hands after but they still smell of bleach. I went downstairs and started throwing a ball to my dog! I'm now SO WORRIED that she's going to have some bleach on her and have licked it. Also, I have the upstairs blocked off because the floors are air drying and a window s slightly cracked, but I am worried she is inhaling fumes now, too!

I wouldn't worry too much. Bleach residue would at-most cause irritation to her skin or mucous membranes. As long as she's not in a heavily bleached room, the fumes would not be enough to cause any problems. Once bleach dries, it is rather safe and I would not worry about having her in the parts of the house where the bleach was. Large dog kennels at places like shelters and veterinary clinics are routinely cleaned with bleach without incident. I would only be worried if she drank bleach. I hope that helps to at-least give some relief and all is well with Emma.
