My dog chews his paws & nails. What's causing it & what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 12 days old | 8.7 lbs

I hear my dog chewing loudly on something and I look and hes biting his paws and nails. I checked and he broke some on his nails too. I thought his nails were too long so I took him to the groomers to get his nails cut. However, he still bites all 4 of his paws and I dont know how to stop him. I was thinking of allergies but we didn’t change anything and everything we give him has been consistent and hes been okay with before.

Hello. It does sound like possible allergies, which can start at any age, most commonly around 1-2 years of age. But we can see the presence of mange mites & nail bed infections too. To rule these out, you will need to see your veterinarian who can perform some skin scapes around the base of the nails & look under the microscope for the presence of mange mites. Oce the source of the irritation is found, the proper treatment can be started to stop the chewing. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
