My anxious dog pees inside. Can medication help with dog anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 50 lbs

I have a 5yo black lab mix that seems to have high anxiety. Situations such as high wind will intensify his anxiety. He is constantly pacing, hyper vigilant and barking. We give him plenty of walks and eventually the anxiety eased up and he rarely becomes destructive when left alone. The biggest issue has been him urinating in front of doors and in rooms that are not occupied regularly. The urination problem is becoming unbearable. Could meds help him? Thanks- Ashlie

I'm so sorry that you are having this problem with Houston. Anxiety can be difficult to control and require both anti-anxiety prescription medication as well as behavior modification training. I would recommend scheduling a consultation with your veterinarian to discuss your medication options. Your veterinarian may also need to do some blood work before starting medication. In the meantime, you might consider using a belly band (https://www.bellybands.net/) to keep Houston from urinating in the door ways. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
