Why is my older dog pacing after seizures? Brain tumor or stroke?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 12 years and 10 months old | 16 lbs

I have a 12 year old dachshund that had a seizure out of the blue on Monday morning. He proceeded to have two more that day. Our vet put him on phenobarbital and that has prevented any further seizures. He had no symptoms prior to the seizure. The vet thinks it's either a brain tumor or a stroke. Does this sound like an accurate diagnosis? Since the stroke he's been constantly pacing, bumping into things, etc. Is this the after effects of the seizure or my symptoms of a brain tumor?

Poor Frankie! Unfortunately, when seizures occur for the first time in an older dog, brain tumors are very high on our list of concerns. A stroke is possible, but not something we see terribly commonly. I agree with your vet's suspicions. Pacing, bumping into objects (possible vision changes), and behavioral changes could certainly be due to post-ictal (after seizure activity) effects, but could also be due to a brain tumor, or side effects of the phenobarbital. Unfortunately, without doing more extensive testing, such as an MRI with a veterinary neurologist, there is no way of definitively determining the cause of the seizures or the recent changes that you've noticed. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Frankie.
