When to start puppy heartworm, flea, tick meds & stop dewormer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I bought Nemex-2 to start deworming puppies at two weeks old. I was looking up other things that puppy need to take and I saw that they needed heartworm, flea and tick prevention. At how many weeks should I start giving heartworm chewables and stop the Nemex-2 since it also contains pyrantel? Also, for the flea and tick prevention chewables, which one is best and also at how many weeks old should I start it for them or should I buy the ones that are just applied to their coat?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We don’t start heartworm and flea/tick prevention until around 8 week of age. Nexgard is the only oral flea and tick preventative approved in the US for 6 months or younger. I would continue the Nemex every 2 weeks until they start heartworm prevention. I hope this helps!
