My dog passed away. Does paw in mouth mean she was in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Female | spayed | 15 years and 1 month old | 24 lbs

Hi my dog sadly passed away but when I found her I was even more distressed to see that her mouth was in her paw almost biting. I was wondering does this mean she was in pain when she passed away? Because she seemed peaceful for the day leading up to her death.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bready! I am so sorry for your loss! I don't think that it means she was in pain when she passed that her paw was in her mouth. If everything else about her position was relaxed then when she passed her mouth may have turned that way. She could have been biting her paw or licking it when she passed as well. I know it is hard to do, but try to think of all the good times and try not to get hung up on the paw being in her mouth. Again I am very sorry about Bready!
