Why is my senior dog gaining weight and always cold? Hypothyroidism?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 22.6 lbs

I think my dog may have hypothyroidism. He is a big male dash hound. He is a rescue. They think he is between 7-9 years old. He was used as stud his whole life. He is on less than 1/4 cup of dog kibble ,2xs a day. That is low calorie w lots of green beans and raw carrots. He is walked 1/2 to 1 mile a day and is still gaining weight. He is very muscle bound, but is looking heavy. He weighs almost 23 pounds. He looks best a about 18 pounds. He is always cold. Always wants under the blanket.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you have been having difficulty in getting his weight down, it certainly could be from a disease such as hypothyroidism. If you have not had a veterinarian examine him and test his thyroid level, I would suggest doing so to rule this out as a cause. If his thyroid level is normal then you may want to enquire about Hills Metabolic Diet. The vet would need to provide you with a prescription for this food as well. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
