How to litter train a kitten that uses towels instead of the box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 months and 2 days old | 3.6 lbs

Hi, how are you? I just got a 4 month old kitten from the shelter, so my 8 month old would have a little sister to play with. When I got my first one - he new straight from the beginning to use a litter box. This one doesn't. She just uses towels instead. What would be the best way to teach her to use a litter box? I keep her in a bathroom with only food, water, litter box and a little mat to lay on, but she still doesn't use the litter box, and I feel so bad for isolating her : (

Hi there! So sorry you are having this trouble with Aria. The simplest thing to do is try putting a towel in the litter box. First just the towel for a few days, then sprinkle a little litter on the towel (still in the box). Slowly wad the towel up (or cut in into a smaller and smaller square if you can spare the towel). Meanwhile, add more and more litter. After a few weeks, you’ll hopefully be able to remove the towel completely and just have litter in there. I’ve also included a good website with more tips and tricks for litter box training below. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Aria! http://www.catster.com/cat-behavior/litter-training-kittens-cats
