My dog's nail looks like the outer layer broke off. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 12 days old | 70 lbs

It almost looks as though the outside shell of the mail has broken off? What can be done about this?

Nothing needs to be done at this time. If the nail isn't bleeding, it may have simply been an old injury that previously damaged the nail, which continued to grow out, and finally broke off. You can try to gently trim or file any loose or sharp points. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
