My dog vomited and died suddenly. Could she have choked while breathing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 14 years and 1 month old | 12 lbs

If a dog that was attacked by other dogs and had punctured lungs and broken ribs, but was being treated by a vet as not eating when we took her home and feed her some liquid type food we got from the pet store on doctors advice. After eating a small amount she threw up. She was still breathing so I thought she was not chocking. Is it possible to vomit and still breath for about 15 minutes, as he suddenly died. The guilt I am feeling that I may have chocked my own dog to death is overwhelming.

Please don’t feel guilty. Choking is a possibility but usually you see gagging and retching and the struggle and fight to catch air. If he was breathing for that king I doubt it was choke. I would be suspicious of the force of vomiting leading to a clot from the trauma as the cause of death which is not preventable
