My Yorkie is coughing and spitting up clear phlegm. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 3 years and 6 months old

I must not of sent this in right b4. My yorkie started coughing this morning & every now & then will spit up a little loose phlegm. She’s nit been around any other dogs/boarded so I know it’s not kennel cough. I see no discharge from her nose - just the loose liquidy clear runny type phlegm every now & then. I’m on disability so I’m just trying 2 make ends meet. My other dog died last year from bladder cancer so Lexi is all I have. What can I do for her? I just want 2 cry......

I’m sorry to hear that Lexi isn’t feeling well. A common cause of cough in a young dog could still be kennel cough- it is very contagious and can even be transmitted on your clothes if you touched a contaminated object/person. Other causes although less likely at her age could be tracheal collapse, heartworm, heart disease, pneumonia, etc. I would reach out to your local humane society as they often have discounted care for those who qualify.
