My dog gets pink eye after playing. Is it allergies or contagious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Is it possible for Hercules to be allergic to another dog ? He’s never had pink eye onlynon two occasions and it was because of the same dog who is one of his best buddies ,first time his friend Billy, had pink eye but was supposedly recovering but unfortunately Herc still caught pink eye , second time I check today& Herc has pink eye I asked his buddies owner she told me Billy doesn’t have anything so it couldn’t be from him but I have a feeling it is, after all it only happens when he comes

Pinkeye, or infectious conjunctivitis, is contagious and is usually spread through direct contact with another dog. It looks identical to other types of conjunctivitis including allergic conjunctivitis, and there is not a good test to differentiate between them. It is possible that Hercules has allergic conjunctivitis if he is having recurrent signs. It is also within the realm of possibility that Herc's friend is an asymptomatic carrier, although this is not common and I cannot find reference to any specific cases. Regardless, it sounds like Herc should see the vet for a work up and to discuss ongoing treatment!
