My puppy has roundworm. How to prevent it spreading to my young child?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 13 days old

My 6 week puppy (Dalmation/lab mix) has roundworm that we're treating with over the counter medicine until first vet visit. I have a 3 year old and would like to know all the information I can about roundworm to prevent it from spreading, other than the obvious of wash your hands and immediately clean up puppy messes. I'm really worried about her accidentally getting infected, so I appreciate all the info you can give me, and any over the counter meds you recommend, thank you!

Thank you for your question. If you have treated Dot with a dewormer for roundworms from the pet store, are cleaning up her fecal material and washing hands, then you are doing about everything you can do. That being said, fresh fecal material is not infectious. It takes 30 days for the eggs to become infectious. So if you have not had Dot this long, it is not a concern, but that is why you don't want to leave the feces laying around. Also, I recommend you bring in a stool sample to your first veterinary visit so they can check for parasites. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
