My puppy is gagging, snorting, and breathing fast. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 18 days old | 19 lbs

My puppy is gagging, snorting and breathing quickly. She is half French bulldog and Spaniel - 5 months old. Not in bad spirits but a bit anxious. We've looked in her throat but can't feel anything. There are no vets open.

Poor Penny!! This does sound distressing for you!! It is possible that Penny is suffering from some reverse sneezing. This occurs when they airway gets irritated and can be quite distressing for all involved. I would recommend sitting with Penny and trying to calm her, some people find that stroaking the underside of the neck can be beneficial as well. Other conditions that Penny could be dealing with include something stuck in her esophagus, or kennel cough. Both of those are obviously more serious that reverse sneezing. I would recommend taking Penny to the vet for a check up as soon as you are able. I hope Penny feels better soon!
