Why is my 8-year-old dog lethargic with shaky legs and tucked tail?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 75 lbs

My dog is 8 years old. He started shivering and felt feverish. The fever went away. He is lethargic, he will walk and move with encouragment, his legs are shakey, he is walking with his butt and tail tucked in, and he let out two wines while laying in bed with no identifiable source of pain. I applied pressure to his abdomen with no signs of discomfort. He is still eating and drinking. I was thinking it could be a virus as most of our house is sick and was exposed to stress earlier. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nikko! Dogs can share some human viral illnesses but I am not sure if what you are describing fits. It sounds as though Nikko is painful. I would have him seen today by your Vet. He could have neck or back pain or Lyme disease. Orthopedic pain and a fever is classic for tick borne diseases. I hope this helps and I wish Nikko the best!
