My unspayed dog is aggressive and alone. Can she adapt to my schedule?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 1 month old | 45 lbs

Hello, so I work 8 hours shifts Saturday 7am-3pm, Sunday,Monday, Tuesday 3pm-11pm and Wednesday 11pm-7am, off Thursdays and Fridays.I used to live with my dad so Gracie was never home alone but he currently moved out and I'm wondering if I should give her up for adoption because of my schedule. She's a sweetheart with me but can be aggressive towards people because she is not spayed. My question is, should I keep her and see how she adapts to the change or give her up to a shelter? She's a Staffy

You are a good owner to worry about Gracie's well-being with the new circumstances. However, you have no need to worry. An adult dog of this size can definitely do fine with that schedule in terms of potty breaks/feeding, etc. In fact, most of my patients are alone for that length of time every day - if not longer. In terms of your actual question: To be frank, a dog with any history of aggression toward people will almost always be euthanized in a shelter. I would STRONGLY recommend having her spayed as this can definitely improve or even eliminate her aggression. If money is the issue - look into local spay/neuter clinics or call up your shelter to learn about your options. If spaying does not do the trick, anti-anxiety/behavior modification medications can be incredibly effective and help you both live happier lives. I wish you and Gracie all the best!
