My dog is vomiting, has diarrhea, lethargic, breathing hard. ER vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 75 lbs

My dog is secreting a huge amount of liquid from his anus, has been vomiting water, is extremely lethargic, and breathing heavily. Should I go to the emergency vet with him? I don’t know what to do.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It sounds like Star is severely ill, and I would definitely recommend taking him to the emergency vet tonight. The diarrhea and vomiting has likely contributed to dehydration and subsequent lethargy, and this needs to be corrected as soon as possible at the vet, as he will most certainly continue to worsen otherwise. Possible causes include toxin ingestion, foreign body ingestion, gastroenteritis, or pancreatitis. The vet can perform tests to determine the cause of his illness, such as blood work, x-rays or ultrasound, while they continue to stabilize him. I hope this helps, and that Star feels better soon!

It sounds as Star is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.
